Cheery Hot Chocolate

Mumma's hot choccy!

CHEERY HOT CHOCOLATE

guilt free. refined sugar free. positive side effect: happy mom and koala kiddos....

Sometimes when the volume in the house starts to climb as the kiddos play starts to escalate and the to do list is feeling a little overwhelming, everyone in the house needs a nice warm drink. At least in our home it provides everyone with a bit of calm, some connection time, and something special for my little koalas. Perhaps I'm the one who needs all these things the most.

Sipping the warm chocolate infused milk settled me and the smiles from the 3 and 4 year old as they discovered hot chocolate for the first time warmed my tired mummy heart. This recipe got us through dinner making time last night.

Stir it up!
The other great thing about this hot choc recipe is I felt good about all of us drinking it - no guilt about refined sugars, additives or just unnecessary ingredients found in "hot chocolate mixes." If you can use cocao powder (which is the raw form of cocoa powder) that's the most nutritious option, but if you just have cocoa powder that's fabulous too.

Apparently cocao has 40 times the antioxidants of blueberries and is high in both magnesium and calcium! I told you there was no need to feel guilty about this drink. Cocoa powder isn't too bad either as it still has antioxidant properties, provide healthy fiber and lots of essential minerals.

The maple syrup, while still a form of sucrose, is lower in calories than most other sweeteners and contains several key minerals as well as some vitamins such as thiamin and B6.

Combine these ingredients with your choice of milk. We drink cows milk here and the best quality we have accessible to us currently is local unhomogenized whole milk. If I was making this dairy free I would use coconut or almond milk. I like the Pure Harvest CocoQuench the best in terms of taste and healthy ingredients.

I frothed our milk with our coffee machine but heating your milk on the stove in a saucepan would work great too.

Go make some happiness in a cup :D

Recipe:
makes 1 cup

- 1 tsp of cocao or cocoa
- 1 tsp of maple syrup

combine in a mug with 2 cm of boiling water and stir well.

Fill mug with warm frothed milk. Stir and enjoy! 😏
